Upper Extremity The natural history of rotator cuff tears

چکیده
Rotator cuff disease is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders treated by orthopaedic surgeons. Despite its prevalence, the natural history of the disease is not completely understood, which is critical to consider when making decisions on surgical and nonsurgical treatment of rotator cuff tears. This article reviews the most recent studies on the natural history of rotator cuff disease and provides the clinician with guidelines on whether surgical or nonsurgical management is indicated.

Basic Science in Rotator Cuff Tears
Rotator cuff (RC) tears are one of the most common clinical problems of upper extremity causing shoulder pain and functional loss. The impact of this condition to the socio-economic status of the society is quite significant and cannot be overlooked. In 2002 alone, approximately 40,000 surgical operations were performed in USA at the cost of $14,000 per surgery. There is an ever-growing increas...

Background: Recurrence rate of rotator cuff tears is still high despite the improvements of surgical techniques, materials used and a better knowledge of the healing process of the rotator cuff tendons. Large to massive rotator cuff tears are particularly associated with a high failure rate, especially in elderly. Augmentation of rotator cuff repairs with extracellular matrix or synthetic patc...
متن کاملAge-related structural changes in upper extremity muscle tissue in a nonhuman primate model.
BACKGROUND Longitudinal studies of upper extremity aging in humans include logistical concerns that animal models can overcome. The vervet is a promising species with which to study aging-related processes. However, age-related changes in upper extremity muscle structure have not been quantified in this species. This study measured age-related changes to muscle structure, examined relationships...
متن کاملTendon Degeneration in the Rotator Cuff
Overuse injuries of the rotator cuff are a significant source of pain and morbidity.1 Despite an aging population and documented associations between rotator cuff tears and increasing age, the pathogenesis of rotator cuff tendinopathy remains poorly understood.1-9 The natural history of rotator cuff tears is unfavorable, as these lesions fail to spontaneously heal and progress in size over time...
